A couple hours ago, my girlfriend asked me what I was going to include in my newsletter today and I said ā€œjust a bunch of little articles,ā€ which was apparently not quite as specific of an answer as she was looking for.

Anyway, here are all your little articles!

On the blog (ICYMI)

And thereā€™s a new episode of the podcast this week!

Reading

Watching

Weā€™re halfway through The Flight Attendant, which is great so far, and have also been binging At Home with Amy Sedaris. Also The Reagans, which is infuriating but really well done. And Wonder Woman 1984 and Bridgerton, both of which wereā€¦bad (and not in a fun way imo).

Just Good Shit: 11.29.20

Pumpkin pie with a pie crust star on top

I donā€™t know if anyone else noticed this, but it seemed to me like everyoneā€™s Thanksgiving dinner this year wasā€¦ a lot better looking than in past years? Normally I go on Insta reluctantly after the holiday (Iā€™m sorry!! Itā€™s just all very beige and mushy!!!!), but this year, I truly loved seeing everyoneā€™s cute little meals! It kinda felt like once Millennials were in charge of their own fate ā€” and werenā€™t necessarily having to cook a ton of food and/or a bunch of the same old recipes to please their extended families ā€” things got a lot more exciting (and aesthetically pleasing). It was nice to see! I hope it was all as delicious and lovely as it looked.

Hereā€™s what I had going on this weekā€¦

(And if you donā€™t mind spoilers, read this one too.)

A happy ending, Ask a Manager.

Cooking

Aside from our Thanksgiving meal, we also made Dishoomā€™s wonderful chai. It has the added benefit of making your home smell like cardamom, cloves, and cinnamonā€¦light some unscented taper candles and youā€™ve got an incredibly cozy winter vibe!

Watching

I watched The Holiday for the first time and hooooo boy ā€” it did not live up to the hype at all. I wanted to like it but I honestly hated it! I also watched A Muppet Christmas Carol for the first time, and thought that was pretty cute and fun. And we watched Happiest Season which wasā€¦fine! (I agree with everything Shannon wrote in that BF post above.)

In non-Christmas programming news, we also watched Taylor Swiftā€™s Folklore special on Disney+. And weā€™ve been watching How To with John Wilson on HBO Max and are loving it so much. Itā€™s so wholesome and funny and interesting; I cannot recommend it enough!

Just Good Shit: 11.22.20

Image: Kiyana Salkeld / Just Good Shit

Hello! Itā€™s a long one this week so letā€™s get right to it.

Holiday things

Since Thanksgiving is this week, I thought Iā€™d share what my girlfriend and I are cooking/doing/thinking about for the holiday! First, hereā€™s what weā€™re planning to make for dinner:

Iā€™ve printed out all the recipes, and tonight Iā€™m going to go through each one and highlight the things we can do in to prepare them in advance ā€” like washing, cutting, peeling, etc. Itā€™s been a while since I made a big meal with a bunch of sides, and I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever made a pie, so I know Iā€™ll feel better if I prep as much as possible in the next day or two.

In terms of the day itself, weā€™re still a bit undecided; we might do what we did last year and watch every single Thanksgiving episode of Friends, which was fun, and/or we might play games. We also connected with a local group about delivering Thanksgiving meals to elderly people who live alone, but are awaiting more info so thatā€™s a bit up in the air right now. Iā€™m also re-reading How to Support Indigenous People on Thanksgiving.

If youā€™re still looking for holiday inspiration, my coworker Amy Roseā€™s 22 Ways to Make Thanksgiving Into Your Own Weird, Perfect Holiday is a good place to start. And if you plan to connect with friends/family across a distance, check out S. Bear Bergmanā€™s sweet How to Make Socially Distanced Holidays Actually Feel Special.

Yesterday, I put out a call on Instagram for readings/poems/etc. to share before the meal and I got some good recs. Here are two I liked a lot: The Thanksgiving Address and "Perhaps the World Ends Here". A few people recommended Mary Oliver poetry, which I am always here for, and someone else suggested ā€œThe Orangeā€ which is one of my all-time favorite poems.

Oh and if you want something to discuss over dinner, I suggest this fascinating 2019 Modern Farmer article, The Cranberry Caucus Is Insanely Powerful.

Moving onā€¦hereā€™s what else I had going on this week!

On the blog

And Sally and I released a new episode of Oh, I Like That about, in part, making the most of at-home celebrations.

Reading

You Donā€™t Have to Fake It Through Thanksgiving, NYT.

That Pre-Thanksgiving Covid Test Won't Really Keep You Safe, Wired.

Iā€™m a contact tracer in North Dakota. The virus is so rampant that we gave up., Washington Post.

This Captain Awkward thread which starts with ā€œPeople who hear about a common-sense rule or a boundary and immediately look for exceptions and defenses for why it shouldnā€™t really apply to them, as well as the people who, upon hearing about injustice, immediately look for justifications can pretty much fuck off forever.ā€

Will Anyone Ever Love Me?, Ā”Hola Papi!

Quiz: Should You Expose Your Relative to COVID-19 This Thanksgiving?, McSweeneyā€™s.

Watching

Weā€™ve been watching The Crown, which is likeā€¦.not actually that good, imo, but I also kind of donā€™t mind right now? We also watched Filthy Rich (a four-part documentary about Jeffrey Epstein) on Netflix, which I went into with major skepticism and was pleasantly surprised by. I was worried it was going to sort of glorify him or paint him as, like, an enigmatic criminal mastermind, but itā€™s not that at all. Itā€™s as straightforward as an episode of Dateline and is just so unimpressed by him. The main thing I liked about it is that the main focus is the victims; hearing from them directly is incredibly moving, and is, to me, what makes the doc worth watching.

Have a good evening and be safe this week. āœØ

Just Good Shit: 11.08.20

New York Times cover 11.08.20 ā€œBIDEN BEATS TRUMPā€

Yesterday after the major networks called the election for Biden, my girlfriend and I, like so many of our neighbors, put our masks on and ran to the park for a spontaneous celebration. It was a beautiful fall day here ā€” the leaves were orange and yellow and absolutely glorious ā€” and the relief and joy was palpable. Finally, some good news.

I hope that this weekend you were able to celebrate and rest, and to let yourself envision a future where, at the very least, we have public health experts leading us through (and out of) this pandemic. Thereā€™s still a lot to post-mortem, and a lot of work to be done, but at least we know what weā€™re up against now.

Hi, friends. I wish I had something eloquent or helpful to say about RBGā€™s passing but Iā€™m kind of at a loss for words. But Iā€™ve re-read Rebecca Traisterā€™s latest piece for The Cut a few times now, and I have been thinking a lot about this sentiment in particular:

ā€œRuth Bader Ginsburg matters, now as much as she ever has, but her survival alone couldnā€™t have saved us, any more than getting rid of Donald Trump will save us. We are facing something far larger: a desperate, life-or-death fight to rebuild, reimagine, reform (and in some cases raze) enormous apparatuses, including our criminal justice, electoral, health-care, and education systems, labor and capitalism, education, housing, the courts themselves, and, most urgently, the health of our planet. It will call on us to fight as fiercely and with as much determination as Ginsburg herself fought, through her life and career.ā€

Hi! Hereā€™s what I have for you this weekā€¦

Reading

The Scramble to Pluck 24 Billion Cherries in Eight Weeks, The New York Times.

The Plan That Could Give Us Our Lives Back, The Atlantic.

The Afflictions of the Comfortable, The American Prospect.

Sweatpants Forever: How the Fashion Industry Collapsed, The New York Times.

We Asked a Gyno About ā€˜WAPā€™, Vulture.

Watching & listening to

My friend Sally recommended Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath (on Hulu), which is horrifying but incredibly compelling. I also listened to the ā€œWayfair and Human Trafficking Statisticsā€ episode of Youā€™re Wrong About, which is a good companion to the NYT cherries story I linked to. And I loved listening to my friends Alisha and Caroline chat in the most recent episode of Gee Thanks, Just Bought It!

Eating

We had Summer Shrimp Scampi With Tomatoes and Corn from NYT Cooking, and really liked it. (We used canned corn, and it was actually great.) Iā€™m also looking forward to turning some summer tomatoes into Nora Ephronā€™s cold tomato sauce soon. Also, two grocery purchases/treats that I highly recommend: Pillsbury cinnamon rolls (the little five-count is nice) and frozen mozzarella sticks.

Have a good Sunday! šŸ¦ž
